HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 164
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING SAM FUNCHES OF THE 1
GERMANTOWN HIGH SCHOOL MAVERICKS BASKETBALL TEAM ON BEING NAMED 2
THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION (MHSAA) CLASS 3
7A 2026 MISSISSIPPI MR. BASKETBALL. 4
WHEREAS, Sam Funches, a senior center for the Germantown High 5
School Mavericks Basketball Team, has been named the Mississippi 6
High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 7A 2026 7
Mississippi Mr. Basketball, one of the highest individual honors 8
bestowed upon a high school basketball player in the State of 9
Mississippi; and 10
WHEREAS, the Mr. Basketball awards, presented by the MHSAA in 11
conjunction with the Mississippi Association of Coaches and 12
sponsored by C Spire, recognize the most outstanding players in 13
each classification for their excellence in athletic performance, 14
leadership and sportsmanship; and 15
WHEREAS, ranked the #7 center and 58th overall recruit 16
nationally in the Class of 2026 by 247 Sports Composite, the 17
seven-foot Sam Funches demonstrated unbelievable talent and 18
consistency on the court throughout his high school career which 19

helped propel the team to postseason success, culminating with the 20
Mavericks' capturing the 2025 MHSAA Class 7A State Title during 21
his junior year and finishing as runner-up at the 2026 State 22
Championship; and 23
WHEREAS, Funches, ranked the top player in Mississippi, 24
boasts an impressive 7-foot-5 wingspan and is known for his agile 25
mobility, elite rim protection and a developing outside shot; and 26
WHEREAS, the first male player from Germantown High to win 27
the Mississippi Mr. Basketball, Funches was named the Tatum and 28
Wade/Mississippi Scoreboard Metro Jackson Boys Basketball Player 29
of the Week in December 2025; and 30
WHEREAS, Sam Funches, the son of Sam and Kesha Funches, will 31
head to the Pacific Northwest for the 2026-2027 season where he 32
will be joining the highly-touted Gonzaga University Bulldogs, one 33
of the top college men's basketball programs in the country which 34
has reached the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) 35
Sweet 16 nine times in the past 11 seasons; and 36
WHEREAS, Germantown Head Basketball Coach Chris Love has 37
described Sam Funches as "the best player in the state and one of 38
the top players in the country" who "plays the right way, doesn't 39
force shots and is a really good passer"; and 40
WHEREAS, the success of Sam Funches reflects not only his 41
personal dedication and athletic excellence, but also the guidance 42
of his coaches and the support of his family, teammates, school 43

administrators and the City of Madison, all of whom have 44
encouraged and supported his development as a student-athlete; and 45
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to 46
recognize and commend remarkable young Mississippians such as 47
Germantown High School's Sam Funches, whose discipline, 48
perseverance and leadership, both on the court and off, has 49
brought great honor and distinction to his school, community and 50
the State of Mississippi: 51
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 52
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby 53
commend and congratulate Sam Funches of Germantown High School on 54
being named the Mississippi High School Activities Association 55
(MHSAA) Class 7A 2026 Mississippi Mr. Basketball and extend 56
sincerest wishes for continued success in all his future athletic 57
and academic endeavors. 58
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 59
furnished to Sam Funches and to the members of the Capitol Press 60
Corps. 61
