LIMITATIONS ON THE PROCEDURES THAT A PODIATRIST MAY PERFORM; AND 7
FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 8
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI: 9
SECTION 1. Section 73-27-1, Mississippi Code of 1972, is 10
amended as follows: 11
73-27-1. (1) The practice of podiatric medicine is that 12
profession concerned with the prevention, examination, diagnosis 13
and medical, surgical and adjuvant treatment of conditions of the 14
human foot. For the purposes of this chapter, "foot" means that 15
part of the human anatomy which consists of the tarsal bones, 16
metatarsal bones and phalanges. 17
(2) A podiatrist is a medical care provider who engages in 18
the practice of podiatric medicine. 19
(3) A podiatrist may prescribe and administer drugs and 20
tests, excluding general and spinal anesthesia, that are essential 21

to the practice of podiatric medicine when used for or in 22
connection with treatment of disorders of the human foot. 23
(4) A podiatrist who is properly licensed in Mississippi may 24
perform surgical treatment of the ankle and governing structures 25
and tissue when that podiatrist meets the following requirements: 26
(a) The podiatrist has completed a postgraduate 27
surgical residency program of at least twenty-four (24) months in 28
length that has been approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical 29
Education and is currently eligible to become certified to perform 30
reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery by the American Board of 31
Foot and Ankle Surgery; and 32
(b) The podiatrist is certified by the American Board 33
of Foot and Ankle Surgery to perform reconstructive rearfoot and 34
ankle surgery. 35
(5) A licensed podiatrist may perform ankle surgery only in 36
an accredited hospital licensed in the state. The podiatrist 37
shall have received surgical privileges by the medical staff of 38
that facility to perform ankle surgery and other delineation of 39
privileges. 40
(6) A podiatrist's surgical treatment of the ankle is 41
limited to procedures listed by the Council of Podiatric Medical 42
Education (CPME) as found in CPME 320, and its successors, as 43
being required for graduation and certification in reconstructive 44
rearfoot and ankle surgery. 45

(7) For purposes of this section, an accredited hospital is 46
one that is actively licensed in the state by the Department of 47
Health as an acute care hospital with surgical services available. 48
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from 49
and after July 1, 2026. 50
