AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 73-27-1, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO 1

RELATED TO THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 5
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI: 6
SECTION 1. Section 73-27-1, Mississippi Code of 1972, is 7
amended as follows: 8
73-27-1. (1) The practice of podiatric medicine is that 9
profession concerned with the prevention, examination, diagnosis 10
and medical, surgical and adjuvant treatment of conditions of the 11
human foot and ankle, and their governing and related structures, 12
including the muscles or tendons of the lower leg governing the 13
functions of the foot and ankle, including soft tissue up to the 14
tibial tubercle/tuberosity. * * * 15
(2) For the purposes of this chapter, the following terms 16
shall have the meanings ascribed herein: 17
(a) "Ankle" consists of the ankle joint which consists 18
of the distal third of the tibia and fibula and their 19

articulations with the talus and the soft tissue structures 20
surrounding the foot and ankle. 21
(b) "Board" means the Mississippi State Board of 22
Medical Licensure. 23
(c) "Physician" means any person with a valid doctor of 24
medicine, doctor of osteopathy or doctor of podiatric medicine. 25
( * * *3) A podiatrist is a * * * physician who engages in 26
the practice of podiatric medicine. 27
( * * *4) A podiatrist may prescribe and administer drugs 28
and tests, excluding general and spinal anesthesia, that are 29
essential to the practice of podiatric medicine when used for or 30
in connection with treatment of disorders of the human foot and 31
ankle, and their governing and related structures, including the 32
muscles or tendons of the lower leg governing the functions of the 33
foot and ankle and soft tissue up to the tibial 34
tubercle/tuberosity. 35
A podiatrist properly licensed in this state may perform 36
conservative and surgical treatments of the foot and ankle and 37
governing and related structures, including the muscles or tendons 38
of the lower leg governing the functions of the foot and ankle and 39
soft tissue up to the tibial tubercle/tuberosity, when that 40
podiatrist has completed training determined to be sufficient by 41
the board at a program accredited by a nationally recognized 42
accrediting association acceptable by the board. Implementation 43
of the provisions of this subsection (4) shall be made pursuant to 44

rules promulgated by the board, which are predicated on the 45
education or level of training, or both, of an applicant. 46
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from 47
and after July 1, 2026. 48
