SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 52
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC., 1
AND MISSISSIPPI ALPHA NETWORK ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 55TH 2
ANNIVERSARY AS THE FIRST INTERCOLLEGIATE FRATERNITY FOR AFRICAN 3
AMERICAN MEN. 4
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., founded on 5
December 4, 1906, at Cornell University, stands as the first 6
intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African 7
American men and has long been committed to the principles of 8
scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of 9
humanity; and 10
WHEREAS, the presence of Alpha Phi Alpha in the State of 11
Mississippi dates back to 1927, when Alpha Epsilon Lambda was 12
chartered in Jackson, Mississippi, marking the beginning of the 13
fraternity's organized alumni movement within the state; and 14
WHEREAS, in 1949, the movement expanded into the collegiate 15
community with the chartering of Gamma Upsilon Chapter on the 16
campus of Tougaloo College, establishing a lasting legacy of 17
leadership development and academic excellence among Mississippi's 18
college students; and 19

WHEREAS, from those early beginnings, Alpha Phi Alpha's 20
footprint in Mississippi has grown to include 13 additional alumni 21
chapters and nine additional college chapters, serving communities 22
across the state through mentorship, civic engagement, voter 23
education, scholarships, and advocacy; and 24
WHEREAS, in 1971, Jackson, Mississippi, hosted the first 25
district conference at the historic King Edward Hotel, reflecting 26
the strength, organization, and statewide impact of Alpha men 27
committed to advancing their communities; and 28
WHEREAS, for fifty-five years, Mississippi Alpha Network has 29
served as a unifying body for chapters throughout the state, 30
fostering collaboration, leadership training, youth development 31
initiatives, and programs addressing education, economic 32
empowerment, health awareness, and social justice; and 33
WHEREAS, Mississippi Alpha Network continues to build upon 34
the fraternity's historic legacy of leadership exemplified by 35
distinguished Alpha men who have shaped the civic, educational, 36
legal, and political landscape of Mississippi and the nation: 37
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF 38
MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize Alpha Phi Alpha 39
Fraternity, Inc., and Mississippi Alpha Network on the occasion of 40
its 55th Anniversary as the first intercollegiate fraternity for 41
African American men and extend our best wishes on this auspicious 42
occasion. 43

ST: Recognize Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and
Mississippi Alpha Network on its 55th
Anniversary.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be transmitted 44
to the leadership of Mississippi Alpha Network for distribution to 45
the chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha and made available to the Capitol 46
Press Corps. 47
