SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 8

A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SUPPORT FOR THE BETH ISRAEL 1
CONGREGATION BY THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE FOLLOWING THE ARSON ATTACK 2
IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI. 3
WHEREAS, any act of arson is a serious crime, but attacking a 4
house of worship is a particular outrage because it is not merely 5
an attack on a building, it is an attack on the right of 6
individuals to worship as they deem proper; and 7
WHEREAS, the recent arson at the Beth Israel Congregation on 8
January 10, 2026, in Jackson, Mississippi, brings to mind some of 9
the most tragic events in the history of Mississippi; and 10
WHEREAS, Governor Tate Reeves said that "Mississippi stands 11
with the members of Beth Israel Congregation"; and 12
WHEREAS, Jackson Mayor John Horhn said that "acts of 13
antisemitism, racism and religious hatred are attacks on Jackson 14
as a whole and will be treated as threats to our residents' safety 15
and freedom to worship. Targeting people because of their faith, 16
race, ethnicity or sexual orientation is morally wrong, 17
un-American and incompatible with the values of this city": 18
