SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 95
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PINEY 1
WOODS SCHOOL SUMMER ENRICHMENT "KAPPA KAMP" PROGRAM SPONSORED BY 2
KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY, INC. 3
WHEREAS, founded in 1909 by Brother Lawrence Clifton Jones, 4
The Piney Woods School, located in Mississippi is one of only four 5
historically black boarding schools remaining in the United 6
States; and 7
WHEREAS, it is a school rich in history and cultural 8
activities, while at the same time, keeping abreast of 9
implemented, researched program trends that can improve 10
achievement for its historically African American male and female 11
student body; and 12
WHEREAS, since 1986, The Piney Woods School's Summer 13
Enrichment Camp, "Kappa Kamp," has been providing students with 14
the opportunity to acquire skills through intensive workshops. 15
Students may choose from a number of enrichment camps and classes, 16
as well as attend a variety of cultural and recreational 17

activities, arts and crafts workshops, field trips and educational 18
lectures; and 19
WHEREAS, work, fun and more all take place within a safe 20
country setting located in the piney woods of Mississippi; and 21
WHEREAS, the primary objectives of the enrichment camps are 22
to: provide enrichment activities for students in grades 6 23
through 10; motivate students to seek higher levels of 24
achievement; expose students to activities rich in cultural 25
information and experience; develop students' reading, writing and 26
speaking skills while involved in each workshop; provide 27
experiences that focus on science, technology and survival; and 28
provide a Christian atmosphere for human growth and development, 29
character education and citizenship in an ethical environment; and 30
WHEREAS, attendance at The Piney Woods School's Enrichment 31
Camp, Kappa Kamp, also provides an opportunity for potential 32
students to experience the school's environment and programs prior 33
to regular school enrollment; and 34
WHEREAS, the mission of The Piney Woods School is to provide 35
excellence in education within a Christian community, through the 36
creation of an exceptional academic model, which supports the 37
tenet that all students can learn, develop a strong work ethic, 38
and lead extraordinary lives through academic achievement and 39
responsible citizenship, but may not have the opportunity to do so 40
for financial or other reasons. As Piney Woods moves deeper into 41
its second century, the school is revitalizing its historic campus 42

while pioneering new opportunities for learners. Today, they 43
carry that belief forward: investing in scholars who will be the 44
innovators, problem-solvers, and changemakers of tomorrow: 45
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF 46
MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize the 30th Anniversary of 47
The Piney Woods School Summer Enrichment "Kappa Kamp" Program 48
sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. 49
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to 50
The Piney Woods School President Dr. Will Crossley, J.D., 51
forwarded to The Piney Woods School Board of Directors and the 52
leadership of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and made available 53
to the Capitol Press Corps. 54
