Changes Rules for Possessing Firearms Illegally

This bill modifies Missouri law regarding unlawful possession of firearms, including who can legally possess a gun and the penalties for breaking these rules.

What This Bill Does

  • Removes part of the old rule that said people with certain criminal records cannot have guns.
  • Adds new reasons why some people, like those who are drunk or drugged often, cannot have guns.
  • Makes it illegal for young people under 18 to carry guns on public property unless they have completed a hunter education course.

Who It Names or Affects

  • People who might be affected by changes in gun possession laws
  • Law enforcement agencies that enforce these laws

Terms To Know

Felony
A very serious crime that can lead to a long prison sentence.
Antique firearm
An old gun, usually from before the year 1899, which is not considered dangerous and has special rules for possession.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The bill does not specify how law enforcement will enforce these new rules.
  • It's unclear if there are any specific penalties for people who break this rule but complete a hunter education course later.
