AN ACT
Relating to Josephine Baker Day .
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows:
WHEREAS, Josephine Baker was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on June 3, 1906; and

3 WHEREAS, Baker was a celebrated performer , headlining revues in Paris after
4 getting her start in St. Louis vaudeville acts; and

6 WHEREAS, Baker was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, in
7 1927; and
8
9 WHEREAS, Baker participated extensively in the French Resistance during W orld
10 W ar II, and also aided the British Secret Intelligence Service and the United States Of fice of
11 Strategic Services:

13 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOL VED that the members of the House of
14 Representatives of the One Hundred Third General Assembly , Second Regular Session, the
15 Senate concurring therein, hereby designate June 3rd of each year as "Josephine Baker Day"
16 in Missouri, in celebration of the legacy of Josephine Baker , a global icon in the arts, human
17 rights activism, and democracy; and

19 BE IT FUR THER RESOL VED that this resolution be sent to the Governor for his
20 approval or rejection pursuant to the Missouri Constitution.
