AN ACT
To repeal section 376.1222, RSMo, and to enact in lieu thereof one new section relating to
insurance coverage of prostheses.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Missouri, as follows:
Section A. Section 376.1222, RSMo, is repealed and one 1
new section enacted in lieu thereof, to be known as section 2
376.1222, to read as follows:3
376.1222. 1. Any health insurance policy through the 1
Medicaid program pursuant to chapter 208, the children's 2
health insurance program pursuant to sections 208.631 to 3
208.660, and any health care plans issued to employees under 4
the Missouri consolidated health care plan established 5
pursuant to chapter 103 that are delivered, issued for 6
delivery, continued or renewed in this state on or after 7
January 1, 2004, shall provide coverage for prostheses and 8
expenses for scalp hair prostheses worn for hair loss 9
suffered as a result of alopecia areata or alopecia totalis 10
for persons eighteen years of age or younger who are covered 11
under a policy, program or plan pursuant to this section. 12
The benefits required by this subsection shall expire when 13
the covered person reaches eighteen years of age. 14
2. Any health benefit plan delivered, issued for 15
delivery, continued, or renewed in this state on or after 16
January 1, 2027, shall provide coverage for prostheses and 17

expenses for scalp hair prostheses worn for hair loss 18
suffered as a result of cancer treatment. 19
3. For purposes of this section, the following terms 20
mean: 21
(1) "Health benefit plan", the same meaning as is 22
ascribed to such term in section 376.1350; 23
(2) "Prostheses", artificial appliances used to 24
replace lost natural structures; 25
[(2)] (3) "Scalp hair prostheses", artificial 26
substitutes for scalp hair that are made specifically for a 27
particular individual. 28
[3.] 4. The coverage required by this section shall 29
not be more than a maximum benefit amount of two hundred 30
dollars per calendar year or exceed a lifetime maximum 31
benefit amount of three thousand two hundred dollars for 32
those persons who select a more permanent scalp hair 33
prosthesis. A person may request a one-time expenditure of 34
up to three thousand two hundred dollars. The benefits 35
required by this section shall expire when total benefits 36
paid reach three thousand two hundred dollars [or when such 37
person listed in subsection 1 of this section reaches 38
eighteen years of age]. 39
[4.] 5. The health care service required by this 40
section shall not be subject to any greater deductible or co- 41
payment than other similar health care services provided by 42
the policy, program, or plan. 43
[5.] 6. Nothing in this section shall prohibit a 44
health insurer or health benefit plan from providing 45
coverage that is greater than or more favorable to persons 46
than the coverage provided by this section. 47
