SB 1606 - This act requires health benefit plans that are delivered, issued for delivery, continued, or renewed in this state on or after January 1, 2027 to provide coverage for the treatment of obesity and severe obesity for persons between the ages of two and twenty years old, and the diseases and ailments caused by obesity and severe obesity.

Health care services required by this act shall not be subject to any greater deductible or co-payment than any other health care service provided by the health benefit plan.

AN ACT
To amend chapter 376, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to insurance coverage
for treatment of obesity of certain persons.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Missouri, as follows:
Section A. Chapter 376, RSMo, is amended by adding thereto 1
one new section, to be known as section 376.1295, to read as 2
follows:3
376.1295. 1. For purposes of this section, the terms 1
"health carrier" and "health benefit plan" shall have the 2
same meanings given to the terms in section 376.1350. 3
2. Each health carrier or health benefit plan that 4
offers or issues health benefit plans that are delivered, 5
issued for delivery, continued or renewed in this state on 6
or after January 1, 2027, shall provide coverage for the 7
treatment of obesity and severe obesity and the diseases and 8
ailments caused by obesity in persons between the ages of 9
two years old and twenty years old, including, but not 10
limited to, intensive health behavior and lifestyle 11
treatment, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric 12
surgery. Any treatment required to be covered under this 13
section shall be in accordance with the standards set forth 14
by the Clinical Practice Guidelines on Obesity by the 15
American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Society for 16
Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Pediatric Committee. 17

3. Health care services required by this section shall 18
not be subject to any greater deductible or co-payment than 19
any other health care service provided by the health benefit 20
plan. 21
4. The provisions of this section shall not apply to a 22
supplemental insurance policy, including a life care 23
contract, accident-only policy, specified disease policy, 24
hospital policy providing a fixed daily benefit only, 25
Medicare supplement policy, long-term care policy, short- 26
term major medical policy of six months' or less duration, 27
or any other supplemental policy as determined by the 28
director of the department of commerce and insurance. 29
