SJR 79 - This constitutional amendment, if approved by the voters, would increase term limits for members of the General Assembly from 8 years total in each chamber to 12 years total in each chamber. Any person who served in the General Assembly prior to the adoption of this amendment may serve up to 12 years total in each chamber, counting all service prior to the adoption of the amendment.

This constitutional amendment is identical to SJR 39 (2025), SJR 69 (2024), SJR 23 (2023), and SJR 49 (2022) and substantially similar to SJR 36 (2022).

JOINT RESOLUTION
Submitting to the qualified voters of Missouri, an amendment repealing section 8 of article III of
the Constitution of Missouri, and adopting one new section in lieu thereof relating to
term limits for members of the general assembly.
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring therein:
That at the next general election to be held in the 1
state of Missouri, on Tuesday next following the first Monday 2
in November, 2026, or at a special election to be called by 3
the governor for that purpose, there is hereby submitted to 4
the qualified voters of this state, for adoption or 5
rejection, the following amendment to article III of the 6
Constitution of the state of Missouri:7
Section A. Section 8, article III, Constitution of 1
Missouri, is repealed and one new section adopted in lieu 2
thereof, to be known as section 8, to read as follows:3
Section 8. No one shall be elected to serve more than 1
[eight] twelve years total in any one house of the General 2
Assembly nor more than [sixteen] twenty-four years total in 3
both houses of the General Assembly. In applying this 4
section, service in the General Assembly resulting from an 5
election prior to December 3, 1992, or service of less than 6
one year, in the case of a member of the house of 7
representatives, or two years, in the case of a member of 8
the senate, by a person elected after the effective date of 9
this section to complete the term of another person, shall 10

not be counted. Any person who served in the general 11
assembly prior to December 6, 2026, may serve up to twelve 12
years total in each house of the general assembly, counting 13
all years of service prior to December 6, 2026. 14
