Changes to Mountain Lion and Sheep Hunting Licenses

This bill changes the rules for getting special hunting licenses in Montana by allowing hunters to get a second mountain lion license during the same year and removing reporting requirements for Tendoy Mountain sheep.

What This Bill Does

  • Allows hunters who have already killed or caught a mountain lion to apply for another mountain lion license in the same year.
  • Removes the requirement for the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks to report on harvested Tendoy Mountain sheep and tissue sampling efforts.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Hunters who want to get a second mountain lion license in the same year they already got one.
  • The Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks which no longer needs to report on Tendoy Mountain sheep harvests.

Terms To Know

Special License
A special permit that allows hunting certain animals under specific conditions.
Tendoy Mountain Sheep Herd
A group of mountain sheep living in a particular area where the bill removes reporting requirements.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The bill does not specify how many times hunters can apply for additional mountain lion licenses.
  • It is unclear what will happen to existing data on Tendoy Mountain sheep after reporting requirements are removed.
