CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

An Act
concerning the school calendar and supplementing
chapter 36 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

Be It
Enacted
by the Senate and General Assembly of
the State of New Jersey:

 1. A board of education
shall annually adopt a school calendar that includes at least three days that
may be used to close the schools of the district for inclement weather or other
emergencies.

 2. This act shall take
effect in the first full school year following the date of enactment.

STATEMENT

This bill requires a board of
education to include at least three days that may be used to close the schools
of the district in the event of inclement weather, such as snow, or other
emergencies.

 Current law provides each
board of education with the discretion to annually determine the dates between
which the schools of the district will be open, in accordance with law. Some
of the requirements established under current law include: 1) the school year
beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30; and 2) schools being in session for
180 days each school year to receive State funding.

 This bill would additionally require
the board of education to proactively include at least three days that may be
used to close the schools of the district in the event of inclement weather or
other emergencies.
