A MEMORIAL
DECLARING FEBRUARY 4, 2026 "UNM DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico was founded in
1889 and is the state's flagship university; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico currently serves
more than twenty-eight thousand students across all of its
campuses and employs tens of thousands of New Mexico
residents, including employees of the university of New
Mexico hospital; and
WHEREAS, in 2025, more than five thousand students
received degrees from the university of New Mexico's main and
branch campuses, including approximately three thousand four
hundred bachelor's degrees, more than nine hundred master's
degrees, one hundred eight juris doctorates and ninety-seven
medical doctorates; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico awarded more than
one hundred ninety-one million dollars ($191,000,000) in
scholarships in the 2024-2025 academic year; and
WHEREAS, there are more than two hundred thousand active
alumni, with lobos in every state, including one hundred
twenty-four thousand in New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, since 1996, the university of New Mexico has
disclosed two thousand six hundred sixty-one new inventions

and filed one thousand nine hundred thirty-five patent
applications, and in 2024, the last full year of reporting,
the university of New Mexico filed for seventy patents, with
thirty-three patents issued; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico health sciences
center is the state's largest integrated health care
treatment, research and educational organization, with
national recognition for primary care, rural medicine, family
medicine, nursing and midwifery, and is home to the state's
only national-cancer-institute-designated comprehensive
cancer center; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico hospital is the
only level one trauma center for the state and sees
approximately one million patient visits per year; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico, as the state of
New Mexico's premier Carnegie-designated "Research 1"
institution, provides a research-driven education where
faculty members engage in investigation and scholarship that
create new knowledge, which brings sustained wealth to New
Mexico's economy; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is a community of
unique perspectives that embraces peoples' differences and
celebrates a culture of contrast rather than a contrast of
cultures; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is the university

for New Mexico;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 4,
2026 be declared "UNM Day" in the house of representatives in
recognition of the university of New Mexico's service and
dedication to the residents of New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
transmitted to the president of the university of New Mexico.
