A MEMORIAL
HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF REVEREND DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER
KING, JR.
WHEREAS, during the week of January 12 through January
19, 2026, the people of New Mexico will commemorate the life
and legacy of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.
throughout the state as part of the "Dream Week"
commemorations organized by the Martin Luther King, Jr.
commission, which was created by act of the legislature in
1991; and
WHEREAS, the theme for the observance of the 2026 Martin
Luther King, Jr. holiday is "Mission Possible Two: Building
Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way"; and
WHEREAS, "Dream Week 2026" will feature events,
celebrations and moments of service designed to uplift Dr.
King's ideals and bring New Mexico communities together
statewide; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King was awarded the 1964 Nobel peace prize
for his leadership in the nonviolent struggle for civil
rights and the passage of landmark civil rights legislation;
and
WHEREAS, through his life, Dr. King left a blueprint to
follow for the achievement of both personal excellence and
realization of "the beloved community", where there is peace,

love, respect and equality for all; and
WHEREAS, it is important to honor Dr. King's teaching
that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere";
and
WHEREAS, the diverse communities of New Mexico reflect
the beautiful multicultural vision of Dr. King's dream; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico is committed to civil rights and
equality for all; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King's philosophy of social justice and
nonviolence remains essential for addressing contemporary
challenges and building unity in communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the life and
legacy of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. be
commemorated and honored; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
transmitted to the governor, the president pro tempore of the
senate, the speaker of the house of representatives, the chair
of the African American legislative day council and the
executive director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. commission.
