        AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to eliminating  fees  for
          the  provisions  of  transcripts for recipients of a general education
          diploma or high school equivalency diploma

          THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
        BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

     1    Section  1.  Section 317 of the education law, as added by chapter 170
     2  of the laws of 1994, is amended to read as follows:
     3    § 317. General education development  exam;  HIGH  SCHOOL  EQUIVALENCY
     4  DIPLOMA.    1.  Notwithstanding  any  provision  of law, no fee shall be
     5  established for admission to the general education development exam.
     6    2. NO FEE SHALL BE CHARGED FOR PROVIDING TRANSCRIPTS OR PROOF OF AWARD
     7  OF A HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA.
     8    § 2. This act shall take effect on the thirtieth day  after  it  shall
     9  have become a law.
