Senate Resolution No. 2328

        COMMEMORATING  the  40th  Anniversary of NASCAR at
        Watkins Glen International

  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to  recognize  and
support events of significance which contribute to the entertainment and
vitality  of  the communities they serve and which exemplify the history
and development of the State of New York; and

  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and  in  full  accord  with  its
long-standing  traditions,  this  Legislative  Body  is  justly proud to
commemorate  the  40th   Anniversary   of   NASCAR   at   Watkins   Glen
International; and

  WHEREAS,  Watkins  Glen  International  began  in 1948, when Cameron
Argetsinger proposed an amateur road race to be called the "Watkins Glen
Grand Prix" to the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce; and

  WHEREAS,  Although  the  first   NASCAR   race   at   Watkins   Glen
International  was  held  in  1957,  the event became a recurring yearly
tradition on Sunday, August 10, 1986; and

  WHEREAS, The true inaugural running saw Tim Richmond take  home  the
checkered   flag,   and   acted  as  an  opportunity  for  Watkins  Glen
International to become one of NASCAR's most well-known tracks; and

  WHEREAS, The overwhelming success of the  NASCAR  event  at  Watkins
Glen  International  has brought important economic growth to the region
and opened the door to several new partnerships and special events  fans
can look forward to, including visits from local NASCAR legends; and

  WHEREAS,  It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those organizations that have brought entertainment and cultural
enrichment to the citizens of the State of New York; now, therefore,  be
it

  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate  the  40th   Anniversary   of   NASCAR   at   Watkins   Glen
International; and be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Watkins Glen International.
