October 2026, as Perthes Disease Awareness Month in
        the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
official months that are set aside to increase awareness of serious
medical  conditions that affect the lives of citizens of New York State;
and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim October 2026, as Perthes
Disease Awareness Month in the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, commonly known as Perthes
disease, is a rare childhood condition that affects the hip when blood
supply to the hip bone is disrupted, causing bone cells to die, the hip
joint to erode, and significant pain and mobility complications to
occur; and

WHEREAS, Perthes disease is approximately four times more common in
boys than girls and most commonly occurs between the ages of four and
eight years old, often affecting active children during critical stages
of growth and development; and

WHEREAS, Early symptoms of Perthes disease may appear subtle,
including a painless limp or mild pain in the thigh or knee, resulting
in delayed or missed diagnoses that may lead to permanent hip
deformities and long-term orthopedic complications; and

WHEREAS, Families affected by Perthes disease often face years of
uncertainty, medical appointments, physical therapy, pain management,
mobility limitations, and emotional and financial hardship while seeking
proper treatment and support for their children; and

WHEREAS, Medical consensus regarding the best treatment methods for
Perthes disease has not yet been fully established, and additional
research, awareness, and public education remain critically important to
improving  outcomes  for  children and adults impacted by the condition;
and

WHEREAS, Perthes Awareness Month serves as an important opportunity
to increase public understanding of this rare disease, encourage early
diagnosis, support ongoing research efforts, and recognize the
resilience of affected children and their families; and

WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater public awareness of
Perthes disease, and more must be done at the local, state, and national
levels to support affected children, families, caregivers, physicians,
researchers, and advocates; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim October 2026, as Perthes
