A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1
AN ACT TO ESTABLISH THE SECOND WEEK IN NOVEMBER AS SUDEP AWARENESS 2
WEEK IN THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA AND TO RECOMMEND AWARENESS 3
TRAINING FOR SCHOOL PERSONNEL RESPONSIBL E FOR STUDENTS WITH 4
EPILEPSY OR OTHERWISE PREDISPOSED TO SEIZURES. 5
Whereas, "SUDEP" is the sudden, unexpected death of a person with epilepsy who 6
was otherwise considered healthy; and 7
Whereas, each year, more than one out of 1,000 people with epilepsy die from 8
SUDEP; and 9
Whereas, uncontrolled seizures increase the risk of SUDEP to more than one out of 10
150 people; and 11
Whereas, during National Epilepsy Awareness Month, it is important to also bring 12
awareness of SUDEP; Now, therefore, 13
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 14
SECTION 1. Chapter 103 of the Gen eral Statutes is amended by adding a new 15
section to read: 16
"§ 103-19. SUDEP Awareness Week. 17
The week beginning on the second Sunday in November of each year is designated as Sudden 18
Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) Awareness Week in North Carolina." 19
SECTION 2. Article 25A of Chapter 115C of the General Statutes is amended by 20
adding a new section to read: 21
"§ 115C-375.7. Seizure awareness training for school personnel. 22
(a) This section shall be known and may be cited as the "Shannon Leigh Adcock, Steven 23
Anthony Christos, and Samantha Davis Memorial Act." 24
(b) It is the goal of the General Assembly to encourage local boards of education to 25
develop and provide seizure awareness training for all teachers and other school personnel who 26
may be responsibl e for students with epilepsy or students that are otherwise predisposed to 27
seizures." 28
SECTION 3. This act is effective when it becomes law. 29
