Recognizing
Water Safety Month.

BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

WHEREAS,
The members of the House of Representatives of the 136th
General
Assembly of Ohio are pleased to recognize May as Water Safety Month
2026; and

WHEREAS,
Swimming and other water-based exercises are some of the most popular
activities in the United States and these activities contribute to
improved physical and mental health and overall quality of life; and

WHEREAS,
There are approximately 4,000 unintentional drownings and 8,000
nonfatal drownings annually in the United States, accounting for an
average of 11 drowning deaths per day and 22 nonfatal drownings per
day; and

WHEREAS,
Drowning is a leading cause of death for children between the ages of
1 to 4 and a second leading cause of unintentional injury death for
children between the ages of 5 to 14 in the United States; and

WHEREAS,
Drowning is preventable through education, supervision, and
preparedness; and

WHEREAS,
Swimming is a vital life-saving skill rather than a luxury. Early
childhood instruction can promote water awareness, water competency,
safe swimming practices in different aquatic environments, and
significantly reduce drowning risks and protect Ohio families and
communities; therefore be it

RESOLVED,
That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 136th
General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, recognize May
2026 as Water Safety Month; and be it further

RESOLVED,
That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly
authenticated copies of this Resolution to the news media of Ohio.
