To
recognize the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States
Postal Service.

BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO (THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING):

WHEREAS,
On July 26, 1775, the Second Continental Congress founded the first
national postal service to facilitate secure communication between
the Continental Army, Congress, and citizens during the American
Revolution; and

WHEREAS,
The United States Constitution gives Congress the power to establish
post offices and post roads, which indicates that the framers of our
government recognized the importance of a postal service; and

WHEREAS,
The United States Postal Service has grown from 75 post offices in
the original 13 colonies to more than 30,000 locations in every
corner of the United States; and

WHEREAS,
The United States Postal Service holds a unique place in the history
of the United States and in the hearts of the people; and

WHEREAS,
The United States Postal Service embodies the spirit of innovation,
determination, longevity, and resilience of the United States; and

WHEREAS,
The United States Postal Service has facilitated commerce and united
the country; and

WHEREAS,
The United States Postal Service was established as an independent
agency of the Federal Government in 1971; and

WHEREAS,
The United States Postal Service provides all people in all parts of
the United States with universal and open access to its delivery
network; and

WHEREAS,
The United States Postal Service remains a vital part of the critical
infrastructure of the United States through the delivery of mail and
package services six days each week to 168,600,000 delivery points;
now therefore be it

RESOLVED,
That we, the members of the 136th General Assembly of the State of
Ohio, recognize the historic significance of the 250th anniversary of
the founding of the United States Postal Service, and honor the men
and women who served and continue to serve as employees of the United
States Postal Service; and be it further

RESOLVED,
That we celebrate 250 years of service by the United States Postal
Service to the people of the United States, look forward to another
250 years of service, and invite the people of the United States to
join in the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States
Postal Service by writing a letter, buying stamps, or recognizing a
postal employee; and be it further

RESOLVED,
That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly authenticated copies of
this resolution to the Postmaster General, the President of the
United States, the Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of
Representatives, the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the
United States Senate, the members of the Ohio Congressional
delegation, and the news media of Ohio.
