A R E S O L U T I O N

Honoring
the Great Lakes Science Center on the One Hundredth Anniversary of
the launch of the SS William G. Mather.

WHEREAS,
The members of the Senate of the 136th General Assembly of Ohio are
pleased to extend special recognition to the Great Lakes Science
Center as it celebrates the Centennial of the launching of the
SS
William G. Mather
; and

WHEREAS,
The spirit of our nation is founded upon, and reflected in, its
exciting and colorful past, and organizations such as the Great Lakes
Science Center play a vital role in the protection of America’s
unique heritage. The custodian for the
SS William G. Mather
,
the organization has used this historic vessel to help foster
awareness and understanding of the complex relationship between
technology, history, and the environment, and it is to be commended
for its tremendous efforts to guarantee that this museum ship is
preserved as a testament to the manufacturing legacy of the Cleveland
area; and

WHEREAS,
Built in 1925, the
SS William G. Mather
operated as a
steamship and freighter for many years before being donated for
conversion into a maritime museum in 1987, and it was operated by the
Harbor Heritage Society before being acquired by the Great Lakes
Science Center in 2006. In that time, it has gained a fine reputation
as the repository of many period artifacts as well as for its
interesting and educational exhibitions, including its current
exhibit, Steam and Steel: Propelling the Future of the Great Lakes,
and clearly, it has become one of the center’s most prized assets;
and

WHEREAS,
The Great Lakes Science Center has enhanced the quality of life
within the City of Cleveland and the surrounding area. With admirable
dedication, this worthy organization has ensured that the important
details of our past are transmitted to future generations for their
appreciation, and clearly, it is deserving of high praise; therefore
be it

RESOLVED,
That we, the members of the Senate of the 136th General Assembly of
Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, commend the Great Lakes Science
Center on its commemoration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the
launch of the
SS William G. Mather
and salute all citizens
taking part in this celebration; and be it further

RESOLVED,
That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly authenticated copy of
this Resolution to the Great Lakes Science Center.
