RESOLUTION 1015 By: Waldron

AS INTRODUCED

A Resolution designating Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-
Adha as days of observance in Oklahoma
Recognizing the Muslim American community in
Oklahoma; and celebrating the contributions of
this community in the state of Oklahoma and the
United States.

WHEREAS, Muslims celebrate two Eid "festivals" every lunar
year, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha; and
WHEREAS, Eid Al-Fitr, or "festival of breaking of the fast,"
is celebrated first at the conclusion of the Muslim holy month
of Ramadan; and
WHEREAS, Muslims in the United States observe this time of
sacrifice and contemplation by fasting, reading the Holy Qur'an,
participating in charity work and worship, and emphasizing self-
discipline; and

WHEREAS, Eid Al-Adha, the "feast of the sacrifice," is
celebrated two months later and commemorates Abraham's
willingness to sacrifice his son; and
WHEREAS, Eid Al-Adha is the most sacred of the two Eid
holidays, and centers around the importance of sacrifice and
giving back for family, community, and the neediest amongst us;
it often coincides with the completion of the Hajj or pilgrimage
that is attended by millions of Muslims each year; and
WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in our communities make
significant contributions to our State in such areas as
medicine, science, engineering, commerce, economics, sports,
education, and law; and
WHEREAS, One percent of our statewide population in Oklahoma
identify as Muslim; and
WHEREAS, Encouraging all State residents to recognize the
significance of the two Eid holidays will lead to greater
understanding within our communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 60TH OKLAHOMA
LEGISLATURE:
THAT Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha shall be designated as days
of observance in the State of Oklahoma to recognize and
celebrate their importance to the Muslim residents in our
communities.
