RESOLUTION NO. 1056 By: Munson
A Resolution proclaiming the month of April as Sexual
Assault Awareness Month and declaring Wednesday,
April 29, 2026, as Denim Day.
WHEREAS, the United States Government has declared April as
Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the nonprofit organizations Peace
Over Violence and the Young Women's Christian Association have
declared April 29, 2026, as Denim Day; and
WHEREAS, both events are intended to draw attention to the fact
that sexual violence remains a serious issue in our society; and
WHEREAS, sexual violence has a profound and lasting impact on
individuals, families, and communities, affecting people of all
ages, races, national origins, faiths, gender identities, sexual
orientations, immigration statuses, and economic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day were also
instituted to call attention to misconceptions and misinformation
about sexual violence and the problem that many people in our
society remain disturbingly uninformed with respect to issues of
sexual harassment, assault, abuse, and rape; and
WHEREAS, national data indicate that one in three women and one
in four men will experience some form of sexual violence during
their lifetime, with even higher rates reported among people of
color, individuals with intellectual disabilities, and members of
underserved communities; and
WHEREAS, every sixty-eight seconds, somewhere in America,
someone is sexually assaulted, and every nine minutes, that victim
is a child; and

WHEREAS, one in three female victims of completed or attempted
rape experienced it for the first time between the ages of eleven
and seventeen; and
WHEREAS, in 2022, the State of Oklahoma ranked eighth in the
United States for rape rates, with approximately 4,500 sexual
assault cases in 2021; and
WHEREAS, workplace harassment is part of this issue, with one in
seven women leaving jobs due to sexual harassment; and
WHEREAS, with the support of compassionate community networks
and dedicated victim service providers, survivors can begin to
process trauma and rebuild their lives in environments where they
are heard, respected, and supported; and
WHEREAS, collaboration among elected officials, faith leaders,
educators, businesses, service providers, and community members
strengthens pathways for survivors to access resources that promote
safety, healing, and justice; and
WHEREAS, members of the Oklahoma House of Representatives
strongly support the efforts of Peace Over Violence and the Young
Women's Christian Association of Oklahoma City to educate persons in
our state about the true impact of sexual harassment, abuse,
assault, and rape in Oklahoma.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 60TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives does hereby proclaim
the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives does hereby designate
April 29, 2026, as Denim Day and urges everyone to wear jeans on
this day to help communicate the message that there is no excuse and
there is never an invitation to harass, abuse, assault or rape.
