RESOLUTION NO. 28 By: Seifried, Stanley, and
Guthrie
A Resolution recognizing alpha-gal syndrome as a
serious public health and safety concern;
acknowledging the impact of tick-borne illnesses in
Oklahoma; supporting increased awareness, education,
prevention, and research; declaring May as Alpha-gal
Awareness and Prevention Month; and directing
distribution.
WHEREAS, alpha-gal syndrome is a potentially life-threatening
allergic condition, most often caused by tick bites, that is
increasingly affecting Oklahoma residents; and
WHEREAS, public health officials and researchers have reported a
notable rise in alpha-gal syndrome cases in recent years; and
WHEREAS, individuals with alpha-gal syndrome experience varying
sensitivities and reactions, often requiring strict avoidance of
certain meat and dairy products; and
WHEREAS, exposure can trigger severe allergic reactions,
including life-threatening anaphylaxis, sometimes hours after
contact; and
WHEREAS, alpha-gal syndrome can lead to emotional, medical, and
financial burdens impacting an individual’s quality of life,
education, employment, and access to care; and
WHEREAS, Oklahoma’s climate, wildlife, and outdoor traditions
increase residents’ risk of tick exposure; and

WHEREAS, public education, early recognition, and tick-bite
prevention are critical to protecting the health of Oklahomans.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE 2ND SESSION
OF THE 60TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
THAT the Oklahoma State Senate recognizes alpha-gal syndrome as
a serious and potentially life-threatening condition affecting
Oklahoma residents.
THAT the Oklahoma State Senate encourages health care providers,
public health officials, educators, and community groups to increase
awareness of alpha-gal syndrome and other tick-borne illnesses.
THAT the Oklahoma State Senate supports continued research into
the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of alpha-gal
syndrome and other tick-borne diseases.
THAT the Oklahoma State Senate declares the month of May as
Alpha-gal Awareness and Prevention Month in the State of Oklahoma.
THAT a copy of this resolution be distributed to the State
Department of Health to inform the agency’s tick-borne disease
education and prevention.
