A RESOLUTION
Designating July 16, 2025, as "Water Utility Worker Appreciation
Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The first public water system recognized in the
United States is in Schaefferstown, Lebanon County, and, being
first in the nation, it is important to recognize water utility
workers who have provided services for more than 280 years; and
WHEREAS, Water utility workers construct, operate and
maintain water and wastewater systems across this Commonwealth
to provide safe drinking water and clean water that returns to
our rivers and streams; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is home to approximately 5,200
highly trained individuals who work in an environment that runs
24 hours a day and 365 days a year; and
WHEREAS, Safety is paramount in the water and wastewater
industry, with water utility workers performing duties in and
around busy streets and open pits, presenting additional hazards
on the job; and
WHEREAS, Extreme weather events cause water main breaks in

our streets and overflows to wastewater systems, which require
water utility workers to operate in dangerous situations to
return service to residents; and
WHEREAS, Water utility workers provide residents of this
Commonwealth with the only consumable utility provided, which is
vital for the health and well-being of us all; and
WHEREAS, July 16 is chosen as the date to recognize these
hard-working Pennsylvanians because, on July 16, 1763, Alexander
Schaeffer and his wife, Anna, conveyed ownership of a spring to
a trust, which was the source for what was to become the
Schaefferstown Water Company; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July
16, 2025, as "Water Utility Worker Appreciation Day" in
Pennsylvania.
