A RESOLUTION
Designating July 27, 2025, as "Dick Allen Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, On March 8, 1942, Richard Anthony Allen was born in
the small town of Wampum, Pennsylvania, 30 miles northwest of
Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen was a star athlete in both baseball and
basketball at Wampum High School, drawing interest from the
Philadelphia Phillies; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies signed Mr. Allen upon his
graduation for an estimated $70,000, which Mr. Allen used to buy
his mother a new house; and
WHEREAS, In his final of four Minor League seasons in the
Phillies organization, Mr. Allen faced discrimination while on
their Triple-A club, which was relocated to Little Rock,
Arkansas, in 1963; and
WHEREAS, Despite facing bigotry, Mr. Allen performed well and
made his Major League debut with the Phillies during a late-
season call-up on September 3, 1963, beginning his 15-year Major

League career; and
WHEREAS, In his first full season in 1964, the 22-year-old
Mr. Allen showed his impressive power and athleticism with a
league-leading 29 home runs, 13 triples and 352 total bases,
earning him the National League Rookie of the Year Award; and
WHEREAS, While playing in one of the most pitcher-dominated
eras in Major League history, Mr. Allen, nicknamed the "Wampum
Walloper," was a prodigious power hitter and run producer; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen was a seven-time all-star and two-time
home run champion, and he won the American League Most Valuable
Player Award with the Chicago White Sox in 1972; and
WHEREAS, Over his career, Mr. Allen achieved a remarkable 351
home runs, 1,119 runs batted in, .292 batting average and .534
slugging percentage; and
WHEREAS, Although Mr. Allen was among the Major League's best
during his career, he never received enough votes during his
original candidacy to reach the National Baseball Hall of Fame;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen passed away at his home in Wampum on
December 7, 2020; and
WHEREAS, On December 8, 2024, Mr. Allen was elected to the
National Baseball Hall of Fame through the 16-member Classic
Baseball Era Committee, receiving votes on 13 of 16 ballots;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen, a Pennsylvania baseball legend, will be
officially inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on
July 27, 2025, in Cooperstown, New York; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July
27, 2025, as "Dick Allen Day" in Pennsylvania.
