A RESOLUTION
Designating August 16, 2025, as "Pottsville Maroons Championship
Day" in Pennsylvania in honor of the team's 1925 championship
victory.
WHEREAS, The Pottsville Maroons, a professional football team
from Pottsville, Pennsylvania, achieved remarkable success
during the 1925 National Football League (NFL) season, finishing
with an impressive record of 10 wins, 2 losses and 0 ties; and
WHEREAS, On December 6, 1925, the Pottsville Maroons defeated
the Chicago Cardinals in a pivotal game widely regarded as the
de facto NFL championship, securing the team's place as one of
the premier teams in the early years of professional football;
and
WHEREAS, The Maroons further solidified their legacy by
defeating the Notre Dame All-Stars, a team composed of
celebrated college football players featuring the famous Four
Horsemen, in an exhibition game that showcased the growing
prowess of the NFL and its ability to compete with and surpass
the more popular college football teams of the era; and

WHEREAS, The 1925 Pottsville Maroons, under the leadership of
players such as Tony Latone, Herb Stein, Charlie Berry and
Walter French, and coached by Dick Rauch, exemplified teamwork,
resilience and athletic excellence, bringing pride to the City
of Pottsville and Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, The Maroons' achievements in 1925 played a
significant role in elevating the visibility and credibility of
professional football, contributing to the growth of the NFL as
a major American sports institution; and
WHEREAS, The legacy of the 1925 Pottsville Maroons continues
to inspire athletes, fans and communities across Pennsylvania,
serving as a testament to the enduring spirit of determination
and the importance of recognizing the contributions of early
professional football teams; and
WHEREAS, This year marks the 100th anniversary of the team's
championship victory; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania designate August 16, 2025, as
"Pottsville Maroons Championship Day" in Pennsylvania in honor
of the team's 1925 championship victory; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognize the Pottsville Maroons'
contributions to the development of professional football and
the team's role in showcasing Pennsylvania's proud sports
heritage; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Pottsville Area Historical Society and the Pro Football Hall
of Fame to commemorate the enduring legacy of the 1925
Pottsville Maroons.
