A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of October 5 through 11, 2025, as "National
Newspaper Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Our nation's founders recognized, in their vision,
that a democracy depends upon the convictions and actions of an
informed public, and that its citizens must have access to the
most complete and accurate information about their community,
their nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is the birthplace of our nation's
independence, and the freedom enjoyed by the people of the
United States, supported by the right to free speech and a free
press, is a treasured principle upon which this Commonwealth and
the United States thrive; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth was a pioneer in the nation's
newspaper industry, highlighted by the Pennsylvania Gazette, a
fledgling publication reestablished in 1729 by Founding Father
and publisher Benjamin Franklin that became the most successful
newspaper in the American colonies and shaped the political and

cultural landscape; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's newspapers have evolved through
the centuries to meet the increasing needs and challenges of a
diverse population to reflect the highest standards of
journalism and public service, accuracy and fairness; and
WHEREAS, Since 1940, the Newspaper Association Managers Inc.,
has sponsored and supported "National Newspaper Week," a
weeklong celebration emphasizing the importance of newspapers in
fostering improved community service, participation and
responsiveness in the everyday lives of citizens; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of October 5 through 11, 2025, as "National Newspaper Week"
in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge the
vital role played by the newspaper industry as a pillar of our
democracy and congratulate the Pennsylvania NewsMedia
Association and its membership and affiliates upon the
celebration of "National Newspaper Week" and for their role in
encouraging an active citizenry and an informed public; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.
