A RESOLUTION
Recognizing July 17, 2026, as "717 Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The 717 area code for phone calls has existed in
central Pennsylvania since the 1940s; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania had only four area codes until 1997;
and
WHEREAS, The demand for more telephone lines increased when
cell phone usage became prevalent, and now there are 15 area
codes throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, The 717 area code serves multiple central
Pennsylvania counties, including Dauphin, Cumberland, Lancaster,
Lebanon and York ADAMS, BERKS, CHESTER, CUMBERLAND, DAUPHIN,
FRANKLIN, FULTON, HUNTINGDON, JUNIATA, LANCASTER, LEBANON,
MIFFLIN, PERRY, SCHUYLKILL, SNYDER AND YORK Counties; and
WHEREAS, The region serves as a cornerstone of our state's
identity and economy; and
WHEREAS, From the halls of the Capitol to the farms of

Lancaster and the manufacturing plants of York, this region
represents a diverse and industrious workforce; and
WHEREAS, This region is also a primary driver of
Pennsylvania's tourism industry, drawing millions of visitors
annually to its world class heritage sites, scenic valleys and
historic landmarks; and
WHEREAS, The shared 717 area code is an iconic cultural
identifier for many Pennsylvanians; and
WHEREAS, This designation celebrates the South-Central
Pennsylvania region that includes Harrisburg, Hershey, York,
Lancaster and many vital communities that connect them; and
WHEREAS, Considering America's 250th anniversary this year,
acknowledging the historical significance of the 717 region is
especially fitting; and
WHEREAS, More people are moving to these areas, especially as
Cumberland County is the fastest growing county in Pennsylvania;
and
WHEREAS, This resolution is a call to action for residents
and visitors alike to support local restaurants, farmers,
artisans and Main Street businesses that make this region a
unique and wonderful place to live, work and raise a family;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize July
17, 2026, as "717 Day" in Pennsylvania.
