A RESOLUTION
Designating September 27, 2026, as "Gold Star Mother's and
Family's Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, When a military service member dies in the line of
duty, the family receives The Gold Star to commemorate the
military member's service and life, while recognizing the impact
of loss on the family; and
WHEREAS, During World War I, families of service members
displayed the Service Flag, which featured a blue star for each
immediate family member serving in the military; and
WHEREAS, When a service member tragically died during combat,
the blue star was replaced with a gold star; and
WHEREAS, During World War I, Grace Darling Seibold lost her
son, George Vaughn Seibold, who died while serving in France;
and
WHEREAS, Grace Darling Seibold founded American Gold Star
Mothers, Inc., to provide comfort and support to mothers as they

processed their grief; and
WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson used the term "Gold Star
Mother" following World War I, representing the importance and
honor of those who served and the lives that were sacrificed;
and
WHEREAS, In 1936, Congress designated the last Sunday of
September as "Gold Star Mother's Day" in order to honor grieving
mothers; and
WHEREAS, In 2011, President Barack Obama amended the title of
"Gold Star Mother's Day" to "Gold Star Mother's and Family's
Day," which is recognized on the last Sunday in September; and
WHEREAS, "Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day" signifies the
impact of the loss of a service member on Gold Star family
members, including parents, siblings and children; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
September 27, 2026, as "Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day" in
Pennsylvania.
