A RESOLUTION
Designating June 23, 2025, as "Widows' and Widowers' Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The American Community Survey, an annual
demographics survey conducted by the United States Census
Bureau, estimates that in 2023, the most recent year data is
available, 6.3% of this Commonwealth's population, or
approximately 687,684 individuals, were widowed; and
WHEREAS, Losing a spouse can be one of the most difficult
things a person experiences; and
WHEREAS, Caring for widows and widowers is an important
teaching for several of the world's religions; and
WHEREAS, Caring for widows and widowers can include
encouraging them to talk to a qualified counselor, maintain
their self-care and reach out to family and friends; and
WHEREAS, The Federal Government has taken steps toward caring
for widows and widowers, including survivor benefits through the
Social Security program; and
WHEREAS, The Commonwealth has taken steps toward caring for

widows and widowers, including the Property Tax/Rent Rebate
Program; and
WHEREAS, June 23 is recognized globally as "International
Widows' Day"; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June
23, 2025, as "Widows' and Widowers' Day" in Pennsylvania; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its
condolences to the widows and widowers of this Commonwealth; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
widows and widowers of this Commonwealth to seek support as they
heal from their losses, including seeking support, counseling
and comfort offered by family and friends.
