No. 108
Session of
2025
INTRODUCED BY CULVER, FARRY, BROOKS, FONTANA, BROWN, MARTIN,
SCHWANK, VOGEL, STEFANO, COMITTA, ROBINSON, COSTA, ARGALL,
HUGHES, KANE, MASTRIANO AND J. WARD, MAY 12, 2025
REFERRED TO RULES AND EXECUTIVE NOMINATIONS, MAY 12, 2025
A RESOLUTION
Designating May 13, 2025, as "Cancer Action Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The risk of dying from cancer has steadily declined
over the last 30 years largely because of smoking cessation,
early cancer detection and advances in the treatment of cancer
and precision medicine; and
WHEREAS, More advances must be made as the American Cancer
Society estimates that in 2025 there will be 2 million new cases
of cancer in the United States; and
WHEREAS, More than 618,000 people will lose their lives to
cancer in 2025; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's cancer incidence and mortality rates
continue to be higher than the national rates, with a predicted
90,000 Pennsylvanians to face a new cancer diagnosis in 2025 and
an estimated 27,500 Commonwealth residents to lose their fight
against cancer this year; and
WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, the five most common new cases

of cancer estimated in 2025 include breast cancer at 13,650
cases, prostate cancer at 13,400 cases, lung cancer at 10,250
cases, colorectal cancer at 6,500 cases and urinary bladder
cancer at 4,150 cases; and
WHEREAS, Many of these cancers are often preventable, and
early detection and treatment are critical as cancer does not
always cause symptoms and many cancers occur in people with no
family history; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network
volunteers are gathering at the Pennsylvania Capitol on May 13,
2025, for "Cancer Action Day," in coalition with allied partners
to advance legislative priorities that increase Pennsylvanians'
access to quality health care and cancer prevention services;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 13, 2025, as "Cancer
Action Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate honor all Pennsylvanians impacted
by cancer and those who devote their lives to fighting this
disease.
