A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of November 2025 as "Lung Cancer Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of
cancer deaths of men and women in both the United States and
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, There have been improvements in lung cancer survival
rates and early detection across this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, More people in Pennsylvania are living longer after
lung cancer diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, Early diagnosis rates have increased by 10%, which
places Pennsylvania at 18 out of 50 compared to other states and
17 of 51 for lung cancer screening rates among other states and
the District of Columbia; and
WHEREAS, Over the last five years there has been a 14%
improvement for the rate of new lung cancer cases in
Pennsylvania, ranking Pennsylvania at 32 of 51 in comparison to
other states and the District of Columbia; and

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania ranks 9 of 39 for survival outcomes
among other states ranked, reflecting a 27% improvement over the
last five years; and
WHEREAS, Treatment access has improved across this
Commonwealth, placing Pennsylvania at 6 of 49 compared to other
ranked states for the lowest rate of untreated lung cancer
patients; and
WHEREAS, Increased treatment access across this Commonwealth
means most Pennsylvanians diagnosed with lung cancer are
receiving the care they need; and
WHEREAS, The improvements among early detection, treatment
access and survival rates demonstrate the positive impact of
increased awareness, research and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, The continued increase in advocacy and awareness for
screenings and biomarker testing will result in more lives being
saved; and
WHEREAS, The American Lung Association recently released the
2025 State of Lung Cancer Report detailing the toll lung cancer
takes and how Pennsylvania compares to other states in a variety
of categories; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of November
2025 as "Lung Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage all residents of this
Commonwealth to learn more about the detection and treatment of
lung cancer.
