A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and expressing condolences on the passing of
former State Senator Jack McGregor.
WHEREAS, Jack Edwin McGregor was born September 22, 1934, in
Kittanning; and
WHEREAS, In 1956, he graduated from Yale University with a
bachelor of science and was a member of the Skull and Bones
Society; and
WHEREAS, He then joined the military and served as a captain
in the United States Marine Corps; and
WHEREAS, After the military, Senator McGregor began studying
at the University of Pittsburgh Law School, and he began his
venture into politics; and
WHEREAS, While he studied to earn his law degree, he
successfully ran as a Republican to be the State Senator of
District 44, which includes part of Allegheny County; and
WHEREAS, He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Law

School as class valedictorian and editor in chief for the
University of Pittsburgh Law Review; and
WHEREAS, After joining the Pennsylvania Senate in 1963,
Senator McGregor served for two terms until 1970; and
WHEREAS, In 1967, Senator McGregor was a founder of the
Pittsburgh Penguins, bringing the NHL back to Pittsburgh after a
35-year absence, and he was the person to drop the first puck at
the inaugural game; and
WHEREAS, After his time in the Pennsylvania Senate, Senator
McGregor worked in national politics before returning to
practice law in Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Washington, DC;
and
WHEREAS, Senator McGregor was appointed as the general
counsel of the United States Pay Board by President Richard
Nixon in the early 1970s; and
WHEREAS, In 2004, President George W. Bush appointed him as a
member of the Advisory Board of the Saint Lawrence Seaway
Development Corporation; and
WHEREAS, At his alma mater, the Jack McGregor Scholarship
offers financial assistance to financially needy students at the
University of Pittsburgh who plan to use their law degree by
working in the public sector; and
WHEREAS, In honor of the Penguins' 50th season, in 2017,
Senator McGregor dropped the puck to start the game once again;
and
WHEREAS, He was also an active businessman who founded
multiple ventures and traveled the world; and
WHEREAS, On January 6, 2026, Senator McGregor passed away at
the age of 91 at his home in Mifflinburg, leaving behind his
wife, 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren;
