A RESOLUTION
Designating March 8, 2025, as "PIAA Wrestling Day of Champions"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Wrestling instills at a young age and continues to
teach athletes at all levels key life skills such as self-
reliance, self-discipline and teamwork, all of which apply to
one's growth in professional development; and
WHEREAS, Wrestling promotes both a physically healthy
lifestyle and mental growth; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has a rich history of and unrivaled
passion for wrestling as a sport; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to elite wrestling programs
that exist at all age and experience levels of the sport; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's wrestlers participate at all stages
of the sport from professional, international competitors to
collegiate-level competitors under the guidance of the
Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) and
even younger with local clubs and associations; and
WHEREAS, Participation in wrestling has grown in all age

groups and levels of the sport; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Federation of State High
School Associations, participation in wrestling reached a record
356,131 participants nationwide during the 2023-2024 season; and
WHEREAS, Boys' wrestling participation grew to 259,431 and
girls' wrestling participation grew to 64,257 during the 2023-
2024 season; and
WHEREAS, The record increase in high school wrestling
represents an approximately 16.5% growth in participation year
over year; and
WHEREAS, The growth in participation can also be attributed
to the increase in female participation at all levels of the
sport; and
WHEREAS, Girls' wrestling has been the fastest-growing high
school sport in the country over the past five years; and
WHEREAS, The second PIAA Championship Playoff with both boys
and girls wrestling in two distinct championship systems is held
March 6 through 8, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Participation in wrestling continues to grow and
leads to invaluable opportunities to compete and succeed in
life; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate March 8, 2025, as "PIAA
Wrestling Day of Champions" in Pennsylvania.
