WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of George
2
G. Cournoyer of Blackstone, Massachusetts, and formerly of North Smithfield; and
3
WHEREAS, George Cournoyer was born in Woonsocket in 1937, the son of the late
4
George and Rose Cournoyer. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Sheila Cournoyer; and
5
WHEREAS, George graduated from Mount St. Charles Academy and Bryant College,
6
before he embarked on a long and successful career in accounting and finance. George had a
7
tireless work ethic and an abundance of energy that was widely admired by all of his peers; and
8
WHEREAS, George served on the North Smithfield Planning Board for a number of
9
years and played an active role in public affairs in both North Smithfield and Blackstone. George
10
was also interested in public policy and service. His idea for increasing the national savings rate
11
and reducing the federal deficit drew the attention of President Reagan’s Economic Policy
12
Advisory Board, with whom George was invited to discuss his proposal. His plan also drew the
13
attention of Franco Madigliani, the Nobel Laureate in Economics; and
14
WHEREAS, George Counoyer was a devoted family man his entire life. He was also a
15
man of deep faith who attended church regularly; and
16
WHEREAS, George Cournoyer leaves behind his four children, his daughter, Madonna,
17
and his sons Gregory, James and Jeffrey, and their respective wives, Kelly, Shaun and Kimberly.
18
George also leaves behind his grandchildren, Ariana, Isabella, Faye, Greer, Alyssa, and Alex, as
19
well as great-grandson Giovanni, and his siblings, Paul Cournoyer, and his wife, Rachel, Pauline

Bouvier, and Theresa and her husband, John Ritacco. George was predeceased by his sister
2
Constance Barret; now, therefore be it
3
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby expresses its deepest
4
condolences on the passing of George G. Cournoyer; and be it further
5
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
6
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to his children, Madonna, Gregory, James and
7
Jeffrey.
