RESOLUTION
to recognize and honor Sharon B. Brown Harriott for
her leadership, service, and outstanding contributions to the state of south
carolina.
W
hereas, the members of
the South Carolina House of Representatives take great pleasure in recognizing
and honoring Sharon B. Brown Harriott for her exemplary accomplishments and
lasting contributions to her community and the State of South Carolina; and
W
hereas, Sharon B.
Brown Harriott is the daughter of the late Moses and Ruby Young Brown and the
granddaughter of the late Reverend H.D. and Alice Logan Brown and the late Reverend
W.S. and Lou E. Young, all of whom served as longstanding pastors in the
African Methodist Episcopal Church, instilling in her a legacy deeply rooted in
faith, service, and leadership; and
W
hereas, Mrs. Harriott
is a distinguished alumna of the University of South Carolina, where she earned
a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degree in adult and community education,
along with additional postgraduate studies, and she has devoted more than thirty-six
years to advancing educational access, workforce development, and student
success throughout South Carolina; and
W
hereas, she served with
distinction for over thirty-four years in counseling and administrative
leadership roles at Midlands Technical College, positively impacting high
school students, adult learners, and individuals returning to the workforce,
while also serving her community as a licensed funeral director; and
W
hereas, Mrs. Harriott
has demonstrated exemplary civic leadership as a member of the 1994 class of
Leadership Columbia; former president for the National Governing Board of the
National Network for Women's Employment; former board member and vice chairman
of the YWCA of the Midlands; board member of the Leadership Columbia Alumni
Association; and an active member of the NAACP; and
W
hereas, she is a forty-seven-year
legacy and life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, having been
initiated into the Theta Gamma Chapter at the University of South Carolina and
affiliated with the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter in Columbia for forty-five years,
during which she has served with distinction in numerous leadership capacities;
and
W
hereas, from 2014 to
2018, Mrs. Harriott served honorably as the eighteenth South Atlantic regional director
of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, providing visionary leadership
that expanded the South Atlantic Region to 175 chapters and more than 18,000
active members; and
W
hereas, through
courage, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to equity and representation,
Sharon B. Brown Harriott played a vital role in the chartering of the first
Greek-letter organization and African American sorority at Columbia College,
marking a historic milestone in higher education and advancing inclusion and
leadership opportunities for African American women; and
W
hereas, her lifelong
service extends deeply into the African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she
has faithfully served for more than three decades through leadership, ministry,
and music at Chappelle Memorial AME Church; and
W
hereas, her
extraordinary contributions have been recognized through numerous honors and
awards, reflecting a lifetime of dedication to education, civic engagement,
faith, and community service; and
W
hereas, the members of
the South Carolina House of Representatives greatly appreciate Mrs. Harriott's
outstanding leadership and the positive and lasting impact she has made within her
community and across the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

by this resolution, recognize and honor Sharon B. Brown Harriott for her leadership,
service, and outstanding contributions to the State of South Carolina.
