A concurrent RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE
PORTION OF SALUDA STREET IN THE CITY OF ROCK HILL IN YORK COUNTY FROM THE
INTERSECTION OF JOHNSTON STREET TO ALBRIGHT ROAD "OFFICER ROBERT MORRIS
MCFADDEN MEMORIAL STREET" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS
LOCATION CONTAINING THESE WORDS.
W
hereas, Robert Morris
McFadden was born on May 12, 1896, in Lewisville, the son of Robert Clark
McFadden and Martha Rebecca Ferguson McFadden. He grew up on the family farm
with six brothers and two sisters. In 1920, McFadden was working as a weaver in
the cotton mill in Rockingham, North Carolina, when he married Carrie Lee
McCoy, in Union County, North Carolina; and

hereas, he joined the
United States Army on May 2, 1917, and served as a sergeant in the 118th
Infantry, 30th Division during World War I. Sergeant McFadden was discharged on
March 31, 1919; and
W
hereas, Robert
McFadden joined the Rock Hill Police Department in 1923. He later was assigned
as a motorcycle officer; and
W
hereas, on November 3,
1933, at around 10:30 a.m., responding to a report of an accident on the
Chester Highway, Officer McFadden along with two other officers were involved
in a fatal automobile accident that took his life; and
W
hereas, funeral
services for Officer Robert M. McFadden were held on November 5, at the
Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. A crowd of thousands including city
officials, friends, and law enforcement and military comrades gathered in the
cold rain to pay their final respects to the fallen officer. American Legion
and National Guard members laid Officer McFadden to rest with full military
honors in the Legion Plot of Laurelwood Cemetery. Company I fired three volleys
in salute and a bugler sounded Taps to conclude the ceremony. Officer McFadden
was survived by his wife, Carrie McCoy McFadden, their son, O'Neal, four
brothers and two sisters; and

hereas, Officer Robert
M. McFadden was inducted into the South Carolina Law Enforcement
Officers Hall of Fame in 2020, never to be
forgotten; and
W
hereas, it would be
fitting and proper to name a portion of Saluda Street in the City of Rock Hill
in honor of this fallen law enforcement officer. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives,
the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General
Assembly, by this resolution, request the Department of Transportation name the
portion of Saluda Street in the City of Rock Hill in York County from the
intersection of Johnston Street to Albright Road "Officer Robert M. McFadden
Memorial Street" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location
containing these words.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this
resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
