RESOLUTION
T
O HONOR AND
CONGRATULATE LOUIS BERRY FOR BEING NAMED SOUTH CAROLINA FARMER OF THE YEAR 2026
BY THE FOUNDATION FOR COMMUNITY IMPACT AND HEALTH EQUITY
.
W
hereas, the members of
the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Louis
Berry of Orangeburg County was recognized by the Foundation for Community
Impact and Health Equity as the 2026 South Carolina Farmer of the Year; and
W
hereas, born and
raised in Orangeburg County, he has been farming since he was just fourteen
years old. Starting out of necessity after his father died, farming taught him responsibility,
purpose, and legacy, and what began as work has blossomed into a lifelong
passion; and
W
hereas, the Berry Farm,
a nearly 100-acre farm in Orangeburg County that has been a family business for
generations, currently plants and harvests corn, soybeans, and hay, while also
housing hundreds of goats, dozens of hogs, and cattle, and Louis Berry has
raised his children with an immense pride in the work that they do to make sure
that the farm is providing top quality food to America; and
W
hereas, in addition to
his farming career, he faithfully worked for the City of Orangeburg, retiring
as a respected supervisor whose work ethic, leadership, and steady example
impacted many throughout his years of service. A lover of sports, particularly
baseball, he also served for many years as president and manager of the
Orangeburg Dodgers, mentoring young athletes and strengthening community bonds
through teamwork and discipline; and
W
hereas, as a longtime
member of Andrew Chapel Baptist Church, Louis Berry has faithfully served as a deacon
for over sixty years, a testament to his deep faith and commitment to God and
his community; and
W
hereas, Louis Berry, a devoted
husband to his beloved wife, the late Louise Jamison, is a pillar of his family.
In recent years, he has continued farming alongside his children, Mary,
Margaret, Christine, Louis III, Leonard, and Franklin, as well as his grandchildren
and great-grandchildren, ensuring the farm remains lively, growing, productive,
and viable; and
W
hereas, the members of
the South Carolina House of Representatives are thankful for and value the
recognition and pride that Louis Berry has brought to his family and community.
He represents perseverance, service, faith, and family tradition, and South
Carolina is a better place because of his hands, heart, and harvest, leaving a
legacy not only in the crops harvested, but in the generations cultivated. Now,
therefore,
