RESOLUTION
to recognize and honor Main Street methodist church
of abbeville on the occasion of its two hundredth anniversary and to commend
the church for two centuries of faithful service to god and the community.
W
hereas, for two hundred
years, Main Street Methodist Church has stood as a steadfast and welcoming
presence in the Abbeville Community; and
W
hereas, the congregation
traces its origins to 1825, when Abbeville's first Methodist congregation was established
on Washington Street under the leadership of a young Englishwoman, Ann Fisher
Moore, whose personal conversion inspired a legacy of faith that continues to
this day; and
W
hereas, in 1840, the
congregation relocated to its present site on North Main Street, where it
continued to flourish. The current sanctuary was dedicated in 1888, with stained-glass
windows and a bell tower added in 1890, and further renovations completed in 1895
to accommodate a growing membership following the arrival of the railroad; and
W
hereas, throughout the
twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Main Street Methodist Church has expanded
both its facilities and its ministry, including the addition of the Education
Building in 1925, the donation of the Greene Center in 1993, and the dedication
of a restored, custom-built 649-pipe organ in 2019, reflecting its enduring
commitment to worship through music; and
W
hereas, today, Main
Street Methodist Church remains a Christ-centered, family oriented, and
mission-driven congregation, devoted to glorifying God through worship,
discipleship, fellowship, and service within the community and beyond; and
W
hereas, for two
centuries, Main Street Methodist Church has served as a beacon of faith and a cornerstone
of the Abbeville community, and, by God's grace, will continue its legacy for
generations to come. Now, therefore,
B
e it resolved by the
