________

The committee on House Invitations
and Memorial Resolutions

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S.
1108) to request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of Fred
Nash Boulevard from its north end to its intersection with Harrelson Boulevard
in Horry, etc., respectfully

Report:

That they have duly and carefully considered
the same, and recommend that the same do pass:

DENNIS MOSS for Committee.

_______

A concurrent RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
NAME the portion of Fred Nash boulevard from its north end to its intersection
with Harrelson BOULEVARD in Horry County "Cornelia Brigham Intersection" AND
ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THE DESIGNATION.

W
hereas, a native of Florence
County, Cornelia Thompson Brigham was born in 1916. She married her husband,
Guy Brigham, and the couple moved to Horry County; and

W
hereas, a devout
Christian, Mrs. Brigham was a godly woman who was active in her church and
community. She lived a faithful life to God and served as a pillar in her
community. She said that without God she could not have survived; and

W
hereas, her husband,
Guy Brigham, passed away in 1951, leaving her a widow at the age of thirty-two
with eight children. She never remarried, and never learned to drive a car, but
she worked hard every day of her life to raise her children to become adults of
whom she was very proud; and

W
hereas, Mrs. Brigham
often walked to work at Lakewood Elementary School, where she worked diligently
in the school's lunchroom; and

W
hereas, in 1981, at
the age of sixty-five, Mrs. Brigham was tragically hit and killed by a drunk
driver while walking near the intersection of Fred Nash Boulevard and Harrelson
Boulevard; and

W
hereas, Mrs. Brigham leaves
to cherish her memory her three children, James Brigham, Jean Brigham, and Monnie
Tanner; as well as many other relatives and friends; and

W
hereas, it would be
only fitting and proper to pay tribute to this daughter of South Carolina by
naming a portion of road in the State in her honor. Now, therefore,

B
e it resolved by the
Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

T
hat the members of the
South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the
Department of Transportation name the portion of Fred Nash Boulevard from its
north end to its intersection with Harrelson Boulevard in Horry County
"Cornelia Brigham Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this
location containing the designation.

B
e it further resolved
that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation
and presented to the family of Cornelia Brigham.
