RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MARION (MORRIS) ANDERSON OF
ST. MATTHEWS FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF CALHOUN COUNTY,
MOST PARTICULARLY THE CITIZENS OF ST. MATTHEWS, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR
MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

W
hereas, it is with
great pleasure that the South Carolina Senate recognizes those individuals who
give tirelessly of themselves to the welfare of this great state's citizenry.
Having spent his life serving others, Marion (Morris) Anderson of St. Matthews
exemplifies such South Carolinians; and

W
hereas, born October
18, 1935, in St. Matthews, Marion (Morris) Anderson came into this world the
son of the late Carrie Anderson and the late Willie Johnson Sr. The young
Marion grew up in the South during a time of major cultural and economic change
and learned early the values of resilience, responsibility, and standing firm
in what he believed. These early experiences shaped the strong, steady man he
would become; and

W
hereas, in 1955, a
defining chapter of Marion's life began in Harlem, New York, where he met the
woman who would become his lifelong partner. Marion wed his dear Barbara on
June 23, 1956, and the couple began what has become a sixty-eight-year marriage
partnership that has remained strong throughout every season of life. Together,
they built a home filled with love, faith, and stability and created the
foundation of a large and multigenerational family; and

W
hereas, in God's good
time, Marion became the proud father of Anthony, Janice, and Kevin, who grew up
guided by his strength and wisdom. Over the years, his family expanded to
include grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren,
five generations touched by his influence as family patriarch; and

W
hereas, in 1956, at
the age of twenty-one, Marion entered the military, beginning a chapter of
service that would shape his character and leadership for the rest of his life.
His time in the military strengthened his discipline, deepened his sense of duty,
and taught him the importance of courage and commitment; and

W
hereas, after
completing his military service, Marion carried his values into his civilian
career. Known for his strong work ethic, honesty, and dedication, he earned the
respect of coworkers and community members alike. Whatever the job, Marion
approached it with pride and a determination to do it well. In 1970, he took an
oath of office to serve as vice president of a labor union for several years.
Later, he served as a member of the NAACP for more than two decades, and in
2004 he was nominated to serve as a board member for foster care in Calhoun
County and South Carolina. Marion also would serve on the board for the Family
Health Center for more than twenty-five years, and he selected the current site
in Calhoun County that has served the health needs of thousands of residents.
In addition, Marion has been highly involved in community activities, church-related
activities, and political activities. Over time, he became known for expressing
ideas with conviction, clarity, and purpose. Speaking opportunities gave him a
way to encourage others to think critically and participate in their community;
and

W
hereas, the members of
the Senate recognize that the success of the State of South Carolina, the
strength of its communities, and the vitality of American society as a whole
depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of individuals like Marion
Anderson who use their talents and resources to serve others. Gratefully, the Senate
acknowledges Marion's praiseworthy contributions to the betterment of the
Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

B
e it resolved by the
Senate
:

T
hat the members of the
South Carolina
Senate
, by this resolution,
recognize and honor Marion (Morris) Anderson of St. Matthews for his many years
of service to the people of Calhoun County, most particularly the citizens of
St. Matthews, and extend best wishes for much success in all his future
endeavors.

B
e it further resolved
that a copy of this resolution be presented to Marion Anderson.
