A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION Honoring the accomplishments of Marvin Richard
III of Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
WHEREAS, Marvin Richard III of Pine Ridge has distinguished himself as one of the premier
high school athletes in this state while participating in basketball, cross country, football, golf,
and track and field for the Pine Ridge High School Thorpes; and
WHEREAS, Marvin's football accomplishments include leading the Thorpes to the 2024
Class 9A All-Nations Football Conference championship, the same season in which he earned
recognition as an all-state quarterback; and
WHEREAS, Marvin's basketball accomplishments include being a two -time South Dakota
all-state first-team selection, a 2026 McDonald's All-American Game nominee, and the Lakota
Nation Invitational Most Valuable Player; and
WHEREAS, Marvin will finish his high school career as a top -ten all-time scorer in South
Dakota boys basketball history and the holder of the South Dakota boys basketball single -
game scoring record of 73 points, achieved on March 3, 2026, and will play for the University
of South Dakota Coyotes this fall; and
WHEREAS, Marvin exemplifies South Dakota values and the highest ideals of high school
athletics through his sportsmanship, humility, and dedication to his community; and
WHEREAS, Marvin's success contributes to the broader story of Native American athletes
in this state and highlights the depth of athletic talent within Native communities and
reservation schools across South Dakota;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the One Hundred First Legislature of the
State of South Dakota, that Marvin Richard III is recognized for his outstanding high school
career and for his contributions to the Pine Ridge High School Thorpes and the state of South
Dakota.
