Senate Commemoration 815

A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION honoring Shane Jordan as the 2025 winner of the
Hugh Hammond Bennett Conservation Planner Award.
WHEREAS, the Hugh Hammond Bennett National Awards for Conservation Excellence
honor the memory of a nationally renowned soil conservation pioneer who raised awareness
about the critical importance of soil conservation in the years following the Dust Bowl; and
WHEREAS, Hugh Hammond Bennett believed that land could be positively changed by
developing and following a conservation plan designed to meet the unique needs of that land,
taking into account financial resources, natural resources, and producer goals; and
WHEREAS, Shane Jordan's passion for conservation began on his family's corn and
soybean farm in the Loess Hills of west central Iowa, where he grew up learning to manage
his own sheep flock, cow herd, and tree farm; and
WHEREAS, Shane's work as a district conservationist in the Redfield Natural Resources
Conservation Service Field Office for Spink and Clark counties, resulted in more than two
hundred fifty conservation stewardship program contracts; and
WHEREAS, many producers have acknowledged that Shane’s understanding of
conservation planning and long-standing dedication to conservation practices have made him
an invaluable resource to them in their conversation efforts;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the One Hundred First Legislature of the
State of South Dakota, that Shane Jordan is recognized as the 2025 national recipient of the
Hugh Hammond Bennett Conservation Planner Award.
