A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION honoring Arthur Mauf for his dedication and
service to the United States as he approaches his 100th birthday.
WHEREAS, Arthur was raised in Madison, South Dakota, where a life on the farm instilled
in him a deep respect for hard work, discipline, responsibility, and performing every task with
care and purpose; and
WHEREAS, during his sea and foreign service aboard the USS General John Pope from
August 23, 1945, to May 14, 1946, Arthur endured the physical challenges of life at sea,
including persistent seasickness, yet he continued to fulfill his duties with determ ination and
pride; and
WHEREAS, Arthur faithfully served his country in the United States Marine Corps, attaining
the rank of Private First Class and demonstrating commitment to duty during a pivotal time
in world history; and
WHEREAS, after his honorable discharge on August 31, 1946, Arthur returned to Madison,
South Dakota, where he devoted himself to farming and building a life rooted in perseverance,
family values, and steady work; and
WHEREAS, Arthur's legacy of service continues, notably recognized at the Veterans Honor
Park in Madison, where his name stands alongside that of his grandson, Kevin Stewart, who
is also a United States Marine;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the One Hundred First Legislature of the
State of South Dakota, that we express our deepest gratitude for Arthur Mauf's service,
sacrifice, and enduring character, and for his contributions to his country, his community, and
the generations that follow.
