Consumer Protection Act

This bill changes Tennessee's consumer protection laws to extend the cancellation period for unsolicited purchases from 30 days to 45 days.

What This Bill Does

  • Changes the law so that consumers have 45 days instead of 30 days to cancel a service, subscription, membership, or return a product after receiving it.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Consumers who make unsolicited purchases, subscriptions, or memberships in Tennessee.

Terms To Know

Unsolicited negotiable instrument
A document that offers goods or services without the consumer asking for them first.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The bill does not specify what happens if a consumer tries to cancel after the 45-day period.
  • It is unclear how this change will affect businesses in Tennessee.

Amendments

These notes stay tied to the official amendment files and metadata from the legislature.

Amendment 1-0 to SB0739

Plain English: This amendment adds new rules to Tennessee law that require businesses with six or more employees to accept cash for in-person transactions and not charge extra fees for using cash.

  • Businesses must accept cash as payment for goods or services during in-person transactions if they have at least six employees.
  • Businesses cannot charge a fee or surcharge when customers pay with cash, nor can they offer higher prices to those who use cash instead of electronic payments.
  • There are exceptions for certain types of businesses and events where these rules do not apply.
  • The amendment text is quite detailed and includes many specific conditions that may be hard to summarize fully without additional context.
