Amendments

These notes stay tied to the official amendment files and metadata from the legislature.

Amendment 1-0 to SB1228

Plain English: This amendment adds new sections to Tennessee law that allow county election commissions to set up voting locations inside jails and detention facilities where eligible voters are confined.

  • County election commissions must work with sheriffs to establish satellite voting locations in jails and detention centers for eligible voters who are residents of the county.
  • Voting at these locations can happen during early voting or on election day, as determined by the sheriff's office and the county election commission.
  • The amendment ensures that incarcerated individuals have access to identification needed to vote and provides voter registration assistance in jails.
  • The exact details of how many satellite locations will be set up and when voting will occur are left to local decision-making between sheriffs' offices and county election commissions.
