AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 58,
Chapter 1, relative to the national guard.

WHEREAS, nineteen-year-old William Ollie Gregory enlisted in the United States Army
in 1947 and received an honorable discharge in 1956; and
WHEREAS, William Gregory continued his service by enlisting in the Tennessee Army
National Guard in Maryville; and
WHEREAS, William Gregory applied for a job with the Tennessee military department,
and was hired as a full-time Administrative Supply Technician, worked hard, and was promoted
through the ranks to First Sergeant of the Howitzer Battery, 1/278th ACR; and
WHEREAS, William Gregory worked at the armory on Parham Hill in Maryville/Alcoa
until construction was completed on a new armory on Highway 321; and
WHEREAS, William Gregory moved the unit to the new armory, where he continued as
a full-time technician, and accepted a transfer to the 278th ACR Support Squadron in Knoxville;
and
WHEREAS, William Gregory was subsequently promoted to Command Sergeant Major
(CSM) and remained in the Tennessee Army National Guard as the Support Squadron CSM
until his retirement in 1992; and
WHEREAS, CSM William Gregory dedicated nearly half his life to the military, retiring
with over forty-one years of honorable service; and
WHEREAS, after leading a life of service and distinction, CSM William Gregory passed
away July 3, 2014, at the age of eighty-five; now, therefore,
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:

SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 58, Chapter 1, Part 5, is amended by
adding the following as a new section:
58-1-517.
(a) The army national guard armory, located on U.S. Highway 321 in Maryville,
Tennessee, is hereby designated as the "William O. Gregory Army National Guard
Armory", in honor of Command Sergeant Major William Gregory and his valuable service
to the army national guard and the state of Tennessee.
(b) From existing resources, the department of military is directed to erect
suitable signs or to affix suitable markers designating such edifice as the "William O.
Gregory Army National Guard Armory".
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
