A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT

relating to requiring a public institution of higher education to

award certain course credit for a dual credit course in computer

science.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is

amended by adding Section 51.306 to read as follows:

Sec.

51.306.

AWARD OF UNDERGRADUATE FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE

CREDIT FOR DUAL CREDIT COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE. (a) In this

section, "institution of higher education" has the meaning assigned

by Section 61.003.

(b)

An institution of higher education shall award to an

undergraduate student enrolled in the institution undergraduate

course credit toward satisfaction of a foreign language course

requirement of the institution for the student's successful

completion of a dual credit course in computer science.

(c)

This section does not apply if the student's major is in

a foreign language.

SECTION 2. Section 51.306, Education Code, as added by this

Act, applies beginning with students initially enrolling in an

undergraduate program at a public institution for the 2025-2026

academic year.

SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives

a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as

provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this

Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this

Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
